Biography

Constantin Boym (b. 1955)

Constantin Boym is a Russian-born American designer whose practice combines conceptual rigor, humor, and experimentation in industrial design. Born in Moscow in 1955, he studied at the Moscow Architectural Institute and later earned a Master of Design from Domus Academy in Milan; he founded Boym Partners Inc. in New York in 1986.

Boym’s work has been exhibited internationally, including Learning From the East at UrbanGlass in Brooklyn, and his practice is represented in major museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He has received the National Design Award in 2009, eight I.D. magazine Annual Design Awards including Best of Category in 2000, and an honorary doctorate from the Corcoran College of Art and Design in 2014.

His publications include Curious Boym: Design Works (2002), America (2004), and Keepsakes: A Design Memoir (2015). Boym has also served as faculty and Program Coordinator at Parsons School of Design, as well as professor and Director of Graduate Design Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar. Since 2015, he has served as chair of industrial design at Pratt Institute.
